A Major Resume Disconnect. It is Not Sinking In.

I open up piles of resumes everyday and the usual first thought I have is, are they serious? Is this really what they want a company, hiring manager, or recruiter to see? Is this really the best they can do? Do they really believe this is going to help sell them? It is truly unreal, but not surprising in many ways. There is obviously a serious disconnect somewhere in this process. There must be.

Let this sink in... Your resume needs to open up and hit the person between the eyes as exuding polish and success, even if you are a garbage man. I cannot say it any other way. It is a written advertisement. An advertisement must be outstanding to work. It represents you and the service you offer and provide. Somehow, someway, people out there have convinced themselves, I guess, that what they have is either good enough or it really does not matter that much. If that is you, you need to rethink some things because you are needlessly making a colossal mistake.

Think about it this way. Ask yourself if you could ever imagine in a million years a world-class company that is selling a product or service sending out what you are sending out to its potential customers? Be honest with yourself. Could you ever see IBM sending out what you are sending out to perspective customers? No chance. Well there is a difference you might say. How is that? Name one more valuable and useful product in the market today than you. You can't do it. You need to treat yourself and market yourself like the world-class product and service you are. Have you heard the saying, perception is reality? It does not matter if you actually are one of the best whatever on the planet. If the perception is that you are not, than you are not.

Well I used a resume sample I saw. Employers, your potential customers, do not want some refurbished resume template or free resume sample you found somewhere on the Internet. They do not want some not-so-free resume builder that you plowed all of your stuff into. Ask yourself this. Does IBM or any other professional organization go scraping the Internet for free marketing brochures and free literature to send to potential customers? Not a chance. These companies know the importance of this area and they have entire marketing departments, or they outsource it, because they know just how critically important these items are. You need to think bigger. You need to upgrade your thinking and think like a business, because that is what you are.

I am aware that 99% of you will not take this advice, because you are utilizing man's greatest downfall, which is his ability to rationalize, everything. What a huge mistake. My colleagues and I open up piles of resumes everyday and we just shake our heads. You need to change your present level of awareness and realize that what you see and what others see is not always the same. I can confidently make this statement, after the tens of thousands of resumes I have seen, that you do not know how to assess what is great in terms of a resume. If you could, you would not be sending out these resumes. If you are just one of the lazy types that just tosses it together, gets sick of looking at, and starts sending it out, then you are going to reap what you have sown.

This is a professional advertisement. This is not a game. This is reality. This is your livelihood. Remember, your reality and other's reality may differ, but I will share with you that the reality of hiring managers and employers is that they want to be sold. They want sharp. They want the best. They want polish. They want structure. They want organization. They want creativity. They want to see that you stand out. The resumes you guys are sending do not say this.

Yes, I am harsh to some, but I can live with that. I am not here trying to make friends. I am telling you this to help your cause. I am trying to awaken your thinking and change your level of awareness on a topic of critical importance. I am trying to get a point through that I am passionate about, and that I something about. If you look around at the world objectively, I think you would agree that there are a lot of people who only give half an effort, which explains so many things. If you think about it, it is ultimately more work and requires more effort in the long run for people to go this route. Don't be one of them. Always do your best.
