Can You Pick Out What's Missing From The List?

I'm too old, too young. I just graduated. I'll lose my government check. China took my job. India has mine. Mine moved to Mexico. I have children to take care of. My parents were bad. My dad drank, mom too. Had to raise my siblings. There are no jobs. I can't/couldn't afford school. My iron is low. CEOs took my pay. I'm white, black, yellow. Corporations are evil. Corporate lobbyist did it. George Bush did it. My boss is/was a jerk. It's Capitalism's fault. I just can't get a break. Rich people are screwing everybody. Nobody's hiring. There's a recession. Everybody is laying off. Gas is too expensive. My car sucks. The company's too far way. The pay is too low. They don't have a pension. We grew up in a different time. Every company has moved away. They don't offer benefits. A guy with an H1B visa took my job. I was replaced with a younger person. I'm overqualified. My GPA is too low. I can't afford the Internet. Recruiters suck. My back hurts. I can't take less pay. I can't take a lesser job. I'm holding out for management. My skills aren't up-to-date. There's no growth potential. I heard that was a bad company. They hired someone who took less money. I have ADD/ADHD. I'm waiting until the new year. Nobody hires during the holidays.

Don't move on unless you have finished the list with your favorite. Add anything you want, because this will be the last time any of these highly counter-productive thoughts enter your mind, your speech, or your writing. This is it. You're done thinking any thought or making any statement as to why you can't do something. Well, c'mon don't be a jerk, a lot of these are very legitimate. No, they are not. They are all excuses.

Identify and know the difference between a condition and an excuse. There are conditions in this world and their are excuses. An example of a condition might be that you can't get hired as a bus driver because you are blind in one eye. That is a condition. Conditions are real reasons, not excuses. The above list? All excuse. You can fight and argue about them all day long, but it's not going to change the fact that they are what they are, excuses.

So what is always missing from the the list? You? Oh great, a lecture, just what you wanted. You know that is not the point of this and that this is the exact type of counter-productive thinking we are talking about. We are discussing this because WE BELIEVE IN YOU. We believe in your ability to accomplish great things. We believe in your ability to have everything that you have ever dreamed of, but you have to stop making excuses. You are better than an excuse maker. People who make excuses for anything are just not that impressive. But you are explaining yourself? No, you are making excuses. Have you ever heard the old Henry Ford quote... "Never complain, Never explain". Wow, what the world would be like if everyone stuck to that motto. Give it a try and pass it along.

Here is an easy way to stop making excuses. Make the decision from here on out that you will always and ONLY do your best, no matter what it is. If you talk to your spouse, do your best. If you are going to work today, do your best. If you are searching for a job, do you best. If you are making dinner, do your best. Don't worry about the quality of your best, it will change all of the time, just do your best. Don't ever take action because you feel you have to or because there is a reward, like a paycheck. If you do, you won't do your best. Just decide that no matter what it is in life, you will do your best. Seems like a reasonable thing to do with only an upside, don't you think?

A funny thing happens when you do your best. You stop beating yourself up. You stop judging your own actions. You stop judging others. You get frustrated less. You stop having guilt. You have less regret. You stop punishing yourself. It is just not possible to do your best and feel bad about yourself. That alone is worth the effort. When you do your best, other negative emotions like jealousy and envy won't be part of your thinking any longer.

The key is that doing your best actually leads to you being happy, which leads to productive action and productive thinking. When you do your best, you will notice that you stop making excuses, complaining, explaining, and blaming. That's all good, because you are better than that.
